The Ramsey family is of ancient origin, though before 1600, we aren't quite sure where our particular line fits in.  The RAMSEY DNA PROJECT places our branch in Haplogroup Number 2, which is of Nordic/Anglo-Saxon origin.  I can imagine some Ramsey warriors invading England or Scotland and deciding they wanted to stay.

In America, our family appears to have arrived early in the 1600s, and I personally believe (though do not have definite proof), that we hail from Thomas Ramsey/Ramshaw that you see showing up in Virginia in the 1630s.  This Thomas may have been the father of the Captain Thomas Ramsey that was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses for Petso Parish, Gloucester Co., VA  in the 1650s, and whom we see show up on records during that time.

This Thomas was almost certainly the father of another Thomas who was a warden and vestryman for the Church of England at St. Ann's Parish, Essex Co., VA.  Both Thomases married Elizabeths, about whom there is little information known.

Attached is the Ramsey lineage from that first Thomas to my grandpa, Floyd Ramsey, born 1904 in Rockcastle Co. KY.    Every attempt has been made to be accurate and to back up research with primary source documents and the lineage is quite solid back to Thomas Ramsey the church warden who was born in the late 1600s.  If you spot any errors, please email me at janie@janieology.com
